New Paltz, NY (9/21/11) – Junior Michelle Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) scored a pair of goals as 16th-ranked Montclair State matched the best start in school history with a 5-0 blanking of New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Brittany Carroll (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) and Frances Schaefer (Egg Harbor City, NJ / Holy Spirit) each had a goal and assist as the Red Hawks improved to 8-0 on the year, equaling the start by both the 2007 and 2008 squads.
The Red Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead just over 13 minutes into the contest as Hagel collected her second goal of the season slapping in a low shot from the left side. Carroll added to the lead with her ninth at 29:21 of the period. Carroll collected the ball and moved her way through the defense before firing a shot to the right side of the cage giving MSU a 2-0 advantage.
Carroll would set up the next goal three minutes later as Montclair State took a 3-0 lead into the break. Senior Devin McNamara (Mount Royal, NJ / Gloucester Catholic) recorded the goal, her seventh of the season.
Hagel netted her second of the game at the 11:56 mark of the second half as Schafer picked up the assist. Schaefer completed Montclair's scoring at 54:39 of the contest with her first goal of the year off a feed from Kate Norgard (Columbia, NJ / North Warren).
Montclair State outshot the Hawks (3-4) 27-11 in the game and had 19 penalty corners to New Paltz' four.
Montclair State returns to action looking for the best start in program history on Friday, September 23 as they travel to Madison, NJ to face FDU-Florham at 6:00 pm.
