Montclair, NJ (9/21/11) – Freshman midfielder Maxx Wurzburger (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) and sophomore Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack)
scored just over four minutes apart in the second half as Montclair
State handed local rival and No. 12 ranked William Paterson its first
loss of the season with a 3-0 victory at Sprague Field on Wednesday
evening.
Freshman Pablo Zegarra (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown)
collected the final goal as the Red Hawks picked up their second
straight victory improving to 5-1-2 overall, 1-0-1 in the NJAC.
Senior goalkeeper Zach Collins (Bayville, NJ / Central Regional) made
seven saves for the Pioneers (6-1-1, 1-1-0 NJAC), who had their
six-match win streak halted. William Paterson allowed three goals after
surrendering just one in their first seven contests of the season and
found itself on the trailing end in a game for only the second time
this year.
Collins came up with a big save in the opening five minutes snaring a shot from Sean Pauls (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) off
a corner kick from point-blank range in front of the net. Collins
would go on to make two more saves in the opening half while
counterpart Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) stopped two on goal by the Pioneers as the game was scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Collins denied shots by Wurzburger and Kevin Brown (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) in the first three minutes and added a third at 53:42 denying Kevin Zalewski (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany).
Ten minutes later, Montclair found the back of the net on a nifty goal
by Wurzburger, his third of the season. Off a throw in from the left
side, Pauls headed a ball across the box. Wurzburger collected the ball
with his back to the goal and then unleashed a bicycle kick inside the
left post past Collins for the 1-0 MSU lead at 63:14.
Mendoza would added to the lead at 67:46 when he stole a clearing pass
from 35 yards out and moved in on the left side before right-footing a
shot past a diving Collins for the goal, his team-leading sixth of the
year.
William Paterson would get its chances but Karl Schoreder’s (Long
Valley, NJ / Gill St. Benard’s) attempt in the 73rd minute went wide.
Naeem Boucher (Paterson, NJ / St. Benedict’s Prep) had a shot from
inside the 18 blocked in the 85th minute.
Mendoza and Zegarra provided the final goal for the Red Hawks in with
2:32 remaining in the contest. Mendoza made several moves in the right
corner to keep possession before slipping a pass to Zegarra, whose shot
from seven yards out ducked inside the left post for the goal. It was
Zegarra’s third tally of the year.
Rogic finished with three saves in recording his third shutout of the year.
Montclair State outshot the Pioneers 14-8 with William Paterson holding a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Both teams return to action with NJAC contests on Saturday, September
24. Montclair State is in Ewing, NJ to face The College of New Jersey
at 5:30 pm. William Paterson is home for Richard Stockton at 6:00 pm.
