Volleyball Sweeps Past Rutgers-Camden

Montclair, NJ (9/22/11) - Freshman Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, NJ / Ramsey) had 13 kills and 12 digs while junior Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) added 10 kills and nine digs as Montclair State swept past Rutgers-Camden, 3-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest at the Panzer Athletic Center on Thursday evening.

Freshman setter Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ / Westwood) had 29 assists and eight digs as the Red Hawks improved to 6-10 overall, 1-2 in the NJAC. The Red Hawks also avenged a pair of losses to Rutgers-Camden last season, including a 3-0 loss in the first round of the NJAC Tournament in Camden.

Junior Morgan Halbruner (Voorhees, NJ / Eastern) collected six kills for the Scarlet Raptors, who dropped their second straight falling to 7-11 on the year, 0-2 in conference play.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and led 18-11 as Batiste recorded one her four kills in the opening set. But Rutgers-Camden chipped away at the lead and tied the set at 22-22 on a Montclair ball handling error. Halbruner put the Scarlet Raptors in front with a kill only to be answered by Salemo, who registered five kills in the first set. An attack error by the Scarlet Raptors gave MSU set point. Campo’s serve appeared headed out, but was kept in by Rutgers-Camden and Montclair turned that into a kill by Batiste to take a 25-19 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Montclair State led 5-1 in the second set before Rutgers-Camden made another run and got within 11-10 on a kill by Halbruner. After the teams traded points for a 12-11 MSU lead, the Red Hawks began to pull away. Salemo put down a kill for a 17-13 advantage giving Montclair the serve. Kimberly Butrico (Cresskill, NJ / Cresskill) followed with five straight service points, including three aces as Montclair led 22-13. After the Scarlet Raptors ended the run, Salemo added a kill and after an attack error, Alli Boettinger (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) closed out the set with a kill as Montclair State won 25-14 to go up 2-0.

The third set was a see-saw set with 11 ties and seven lead changes as the two teams were never separated by more than two points until the latter portion. Tied at 15-15, Butrico served five consecutive points with Salemo getting two kills in the run as MSU moved in front by five points. After several attack errors on both side, Batiste finished off a Campo feed to a kill and a 23-19 Red Hawk lead. The Scarlet Raptors committed an attack error and Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) finished off the match for Montclair with a kill as MSU won the third set 25-19.

Girgus finished with six kills and eight digs while sophomore libero Katilyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) had a match-high 17 digs. Erika Gerner (Sparta, NJ / Sparta) had four kills and three total blocks.

Kristin Koloski (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) posted five kills and Kristie Keating (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill West) four and 10 digs for the Scarlet Raptors. Olivia Murphy (Somerdale, NJ / Sterling), Rebecca Brown (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) and libero Heather Hyon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) had 12 digs apiece.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, September 24. Montclair State heads to Reading, PA to face Penn State-Berks and Wilkes at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm, respectively. Rutgers-Camden is home to face Penn State-Abington at 7:00 pm.
