Montclair, NJ (9/29/11) – Senior outside
hitter Michelle Ferrari (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) collected 13 kills
while senior setter Tiffany Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, NJ / Pascack
Hills) posted 27 assists and 13 digs as Ramapo College recorded a
three-set sweep of Montclair State in an NJAC contest at the Panzer
Athletic Center on Thursday evening.
Junior Julia Tuzio (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) had seven kills
and five digs as the Roadrunners used two key spurts in each of the
first two sets for a 25-15 and 25-19 victories. Ramapo (9-4, 3-1 NJAC)
then held off MSU, 26-24 in the third set.
Freshman outside hitter Danielle Salemo (Ramsey, NJ / Ramsey)
had 10 kills and eight digs for Montclair State, which dropped its
second straight as the Red Hawks fell to 7-12 overall, 1-3 in the NJAC.
The Roadrunner never trailed in the opening set and took 9-5
lead as Ferrari registered one of her seven kills in the first set.
Montclair State would climb back into the set and got within 16-14 on
an attack error forcing a timeout by Ramapo. The stoppage worked as the
Roadrunners reeled off the next seven points taking a 23-14 lead on
Sara Pendleton’s (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) kill. After a service
error gave a point to MSU, Ferrari notched her final kill and Tuzio an
ace on set point as Ramapo took a one-set advantage with the 25-15
victory.
In the second set, Ramapo took a 10-9 lead on a kill by
Deandra Black (Westfield, NJ / East Brunswick) however Montclair State
rattled off the next six points as Salemo had three kills and three
attack errors by the Roadrunners gave MSU a 15-10 lead. Ramapo then
swung the momentum back in its favor scoring the next eight points and
11 of 12 o take a 21-16 lead. Montclair’s Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional)
got the Red Hawks within three points at 2-18, but that would be as
close as MSU would get as Fischer’s kill on set point put Ramapo up 2-0
with a 25-19 triumph.
The third set would provide some drama as Ramapo led 24-20 on
a kill by Pendleton. Montclair State then held off four match-points as
Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) had
two kills in the run and a error by the Roadrunners tied the set at
24-24. Ramapo regained the lead on an attack error by Montclair and a
second miscue on the attack by the Red Hawks ended the match as Ramapo
completed the sweep with a 26-24 win.
Pendleton and Black had six kills apiece for Ramapo,which got 10 digs from Elizabeth Steck (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee).
Gerner finished with seven kills while Batiste added three kills and six digs. Freshman Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ / Westwood) had 24 assists and five digs with libero Katilyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) collecting a team-high 13 digs. Sophomore Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) returned to the lineup after missing the last nine matches and had four kills and four digs.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 1 with home
contests. Montclair takes on John Jay College at 11:00 am while the
Roadrunners face Centenary College, Mount St. Vincent and
SUNY-Plattsburgh in a quad-match at the Bradley Center in Mahwah at the
same time.
