Montclair, NJ (10/31/11) – Freshman goalkeeper Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) made two saves while senior Rachel Senyszyn (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury)
delivered what turned out to be the winning penalty kick in the
shootout as third-seeded Montclair State advanced in the New Jersey
Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament following a scoreless
draw with No. 6 seed William Paterson at Sprague Field on Monday
The Red Hawks moved on after taking the shootout, 3-1 after 110 minutes of scoreless action. MSU (13-4-2) will have a quick turnaround as Montclair now heads to the semifinals to face No. 2 seed The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, November 1 in Ewing at 7:30 pm. The winner advances to Friday’s conference championship game.
Sophomore Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) made five saves in recording her third shutout for William Paterson, which ended its season at 5-8-2.
Much like it’s September 21 meeting won by Montclair State in overtime, 1-0, 90 minutes of regulation plus two 10-minute overtime periods were not enough to declare a winner as the contest headed into penalty kicks.
William Paterson got the first chance, however Nicole Kufel’s (Oradell, NJ / River Dell) attempt was snared by Policastro. Francesca Gibson (Cape May, NJ / Lower Cape May Regional) countered with a conversion as MSU led 1-0 after the first round. Taylor Zabicki (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) was successful on her attempt for the Pioneers in the second round but she was matched by Montclair’s Jenna Carroll (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) as the Red Hawks led 2-1.
Policastro came up big again stopping Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, NJ / Roxbury) to start off the third round. Senyszyn would convert her attempt as Montclair State led 3-1. William Paterson’s Ashley Garbowski (Woodbridge, NJ / Woodbridge) needed to convert her attempt to keep the Pioneers’ hope alive however her shot caromed off the post.
Policastro made four saves as she collected her seventh shutout of the season.
Montclair State outshot William Paterson 19-8 in the contest however the Pioneers made the most of their opportunities with three attempts on goal in the first 45 minutes, including a header by Heidi Rogers (Rovervale, NJ / Pascack Valley) in front of the net at the 40:42 mark that was smothered by Policastro.
Falduto would come up with a key save of her own less than minute later as she denied Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ / Westwood) with 3:35 left as the game went to halftime scoreless.
Neither team managed much in the second half getting just one shot on goal apiece. In the first overtime, Falduto stopped two more shots, including back-to-back attempts by Allison Wacker (Stockholm, NJ / Wallkill Valley) and Senyszyn midway through the period.
Montclair State would come within inches of getting the game-winner in the second OT as Carroll blasted a shot from 35 yards out that clipped the top of the crossbar. The shot eerily similar to Carroll’s game-winning goal against the Pioneers in the September match.
