Montclair, NJ (11/12/11) – Montclair State
University got goal scoring from five different players as the Red
Hawks advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Men’s
Soccer Championship with a 5-0 victory over Framingham State on
Saturday at MSU Soccer Park.
Sophomore Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ) and Kevin Zalewski (Parsippany, NJ)
each had goals in the first half as MSU (16-3-3) advances to face
Dickinson College for a chance at a Sweet 16 berth in the NCAAs for the
third time in the last six years.
The Red Hawks and Red Devils, a 2-1 winner over Vassar in the other contest on Saturday, will square off at 1:00 pm.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Yoder (Southbridge, MA) made seven saves
for Framingham State, which finished its season at 8-9-3. The Rams,
making their third NCAA appearance overall and first since 2008, earned
their way into the tournament by winning the MASCAC Championship last
Saturday against Salem State.
Mendoza gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead at the 28:13 mark as goalkeeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ) served
a free goal kick to Mendoza 15 yards out on the right side. Mendoza
then fired a shot to the far post for his 14th goal of the season as
the Red Hawks led 1-0.
Zalewski would extend the lead with 5:28 to go before halftime
as he went in on a breakaway against Yoder before flicking in a shot
inside the near post from eight yards out for his 11th tally of the
year.
Senior Jon Christensen (Medford Lakes, NJ) scored his third 3:08 into the second off banging in a rebound from seven yards out for a three-goal lead. Senior Mike Rudden (Kearny, NJ) netted his second of the year as he put in a cross from Joe Borrajo (Clifton, NJ) in the 81st minute.
Freshman Tomaz Kwiatkowski (Wallington, NJ) got the final goal, chipping in a pass from Dan DiMaio (Wayne, NJ) with 3:51 to play.
Rogic made five saves before giving way to Kevin Lynch (Cinnaminson, NJ) as Montclair State recorded its 11th shutout of the season.
