Men's Basketball Knocked off by Staten Island, 70-60

Montclair, NJ (11/26/11) – Sophomore guard Bloochy Magloire (Staten Island, NY / Susan Wagner) scored 18 of 23 points in the second half as College of Staten Island picked up its first win of the season as the Dolphins knocked off Montclair State, 70-60 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.

Senior forward Jordan Young (Asbury Park, NJ / Wall Township) had 17 points as CSI (1-2) got into the win column after suffering a pair of overtime losses in the Lycoming Tip-Off Tournament on November 18-19.

Freshman guard Ken Rubenstein (South Orange, NJ / Columbia) came off the bench and scored a game-high 24 points for the Red Hawks, who fell to 2-2 with the loss.

Montclair State led 21-20 at halftime, but after a back-and-forth six minutes to open the second stanza, the Dolphins scored 12 of the next 14 points to take a 10-point advantage with just under 10 minutes to go. Maglorie untied the game with a layup to make the score 37-35 and added another bucket while Dylan Bulger (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) and T.J. Hibbs (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s) also had four apiece as CSI built a 47-37 advantage.

The Red Hawks responded with 13 of the next 16 points to tie the game at 50-50 on a layup by Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater- Raritan). August collected six points in the spurt with Rubenstein hitting four times at the free-throw line as the game was knotted for the final time with 5:58 to play.

But in a game of scoring runs, Staten Island would get the final one. Young hit two at the foul line to give the Dolphins the lead for good and Dale Taranto (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s) drained a three-pointer as Staten Island led 57-50 with 4:09 left.  A three by Rubenstein, one of five in the game, pulled Montclair within 61-56 with 2:32 to go however that would be as close as the Red Hawks would get the rest of the way.

Hibbs added 13 points for CSI, which got eight points and eight rebounds from Bulger.

August finished with 13 points and six rebounds while Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ / Warren Hills) grabbed 16 rebounds. Brian Flores (Union, NJ / Union Catholic) added seven points.  

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, November 30 as its opens up NJAC play at Rutgers-Newark beginning at 8:00 pm. Staten Island is home to Drew University on Tuesday, November 29 (7:30 pm).
