Montclair, NJ (12/8/11) – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams both dropped to 2-4 on the season as the Red Hawks were swept in a dual meet by Misericordia University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Thursday evening. The MSU men fell 142-118 to the Cougars while the women suffered a 154-103 loss.
For the Red Hawk women's team, junior Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) won a pair of individual events as she swept the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 25.58 and 56.25, respectively. Vallone then swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay that produced a time of 3:59.46. Freshman Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ / Brick Township), Allie Golden (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) and Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) comprised the first three legs of the quartet.
Joseph would also capture the 100 breststroke with a time of 1:12.23 while Abner recorded a time of 2:18.54 in taking top honors in the 200 individual medley.
For the MSU men, Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) was a triple-winner taking first in two individual events while helping the 200 medley relay to a victory. Lee swam the second leg of the relay and combined with Nikolas Lumkong (Byrum, NJ / Pope John XXIII), Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) and Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) for a time of 1:41.21.
Lee would go on to win the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and he led 1-2 MSU finishes in both races. Lee won the 100 event with a time of 1:02.00 tapping in just ahead of Donny Keenan (Scotch Plains, NJ / St. Joseph's), who finished at 1:04.07. Lee swam 2:22.45 to capture the 200 event while Michael Volski (Edison, NJ / Edison) posted a time of 2:26.57.
Sophomore Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison)
won twice as he took top honors in both distance freestyle events.
Berry swam 10:52.26 to win the 1000 freestyle before coming back to win
the 500 event with a time of 5:16.51. Long captured the 50 freestyle
with a time of 22.46.
The Red Hawks get right back to action on Friday, December 9 as they travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on a pair of Division I opponents from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) as Montclair faces St. Peter's College and Manhattan College in a tri-meet. It will be the final dual meet for Montclair State, which will then go on break returning to the pool on January 16, 2012 as the men face New Jersey Institute of Technology.
