Montclair, NJ (12/8/11) – Senior Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) registered his third straight double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds as Montclair State extended its winning streak to four games with an 84-63 win at New Paltz on Thursday evening.
Junior guard Ken Rubenstein (South Orange, NJ / Columbia) added 21 points while Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ / Neptune) had 14 points off the bench as Montclair improved to 6-2 with the victory.
It took nearly two minutes for either team to get on the scoreboard, until Montclair State’s Brian Flores (Union, NJ / Union Catholic) opened the scoring with a fastbreak layup with 18:03 remaining in the first half. New Paltz took one of its two leads of the game one minute later, when Harris Wichard hit his first three-pointer of the evening put the Hawks up, 3-2. Back-to-back threes from freshman guard/forward Matt Pierson (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) gave New Paltz its biggest lead of the evening, 9-4, with 15:27 to play in the first half.
The Red Hawks trailed 11-9, but scored the next nine points to take the lead for good. Ordell Goldson tipped in a rebound to tie the game and August scored four straight for a 15-11 lead. Flores drained a three as Montclair eventually opened up a 33-16 lead as Singleton finished off a fast break with a layup with 7:45 left.
A layup by James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) gave the Red Hawks their largest lead at 44-24 with 4:29 to go as MSU cruised into halftime with a 49-30 lead.
Flores finished with 10 points while Goldson posted six points and seven rebounds.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, December 10 as they travel to City College of New York for a 3:00 pm matchup with the Beavers.
