Dr. Lesley Sylvan, an assistant professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders, is the author of the forthcoming book titled Multi-Tiered Systems of Support: Implementation Tools for Speech-Language Pathologists in Education, published by Plural Publishing. This book provides school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) with detailed tools, ideas, and inspiration to be impactful within the multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework. The MTSS framework is a tiered system of support that involves multiple levels of instruction aimed at meeting students’ needs in a timely and efficient manner. In contrast to a “one-size-fits-all” model, a central element of MTSS is providing all students with a strong research-based core curriculum and addressing the needs of students who require more support through increasingly intense “tiers.” The focus of this book is providing school-based SLPs with a concrete, immediate, and practical way to make a difference for students within the MTSS framework.

The publication of the book is timely in light of the COVID-19 public health crisis, which has both highlighted and exacerbated the challenges faced in the K-12 education system. Through involvement within MTSS, school-based SLPs can strive to make a meaningful difference for students struggling academically at this challenging time. This idea is further explored in Dr. Sylvan’s article titled “Tackling the Current Challenges Faced in Public Schools: MTSS as Part of the Solution” on the Plural Publishing website.

Dr. Sylvan’s book is available now on the Plural Publishing website and on Amazon.
