As competition for natural resources persists and concern over the environmental impact of greenhouses gases grows, corporations are increasingly being asked to make their business activities more sustainable. Reducing the environmental impact of our products and activities is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and has assumed an equal role to our corporate philanthropy. As Wakefern ramps-up its commitment in this area the support of developing a strong bench to move initiatives forward will be key.

This internship position is a great opportunity for a student majoring in Environmental Sciences, Communications, or another related field to gain hands-on experience working with Wakefern’s Consumer and Corporate Communications Division. In this position, the intern will assist the Environmental Affairs Administrator in developing and implementing sustainability programs through the organization including at Wakefern and its member companies.

Responsibilities are inclusive of but not limited to:

  • Assist with projects associated with meeting corporate sustainability goals including:
    • Creating baseline reports for Wakefern facilities
    • Conducting wholesale and retail waste audit
    • Complete best practices guide to composting and food gleaning
    • Participate in EDF’s Climate Corp Program to identify energy reduction opportunities
    • Educate consumers on recycling issues
    • Communicate to membership sustainability cost-saving best practices
    • Research and communicate findings associated with sustainability issues important to the retail grocery sector
    • Coordinate with eNGOs, Community Relations Manager and EAA to develop Associate volunteer opportunities
    • Work with EAA and Wakefern Green Teams to implement projects associated with Wakefern’s “Project Green”(internal sustainability program)
    • Research and post intranet sustainability articles

To be considered a candidate must meet the minimum qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have completed 24 college credits with a 2.9 cumulative GPA or better
  • Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate school for fall of 2016
  • Successful completion of a substance abuse test and background check required
  • Valid driver’s license and flexibility with regard to travel required
  • Strong MS Office skills (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and customer service skills with the ability to multitask and manage time effectively
  • Solid writing and grammar skills as well as excellent communication skills
  • Detail oriented, able to work on multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and operate in a team environment to accomplish goals
  • Ability to exhibit proper business etiquette when dealing with all levels of the organization
  • Environmental Sciences majors preferred
