Distinguished Alumna Kathleen Zelman to Speak at College Convocation

Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, LD has been the director of nutrition for the number one health and wellness website for more than eleven years.  During her tenure she has helped build a state-of-the-art food, diet and nutrition portal.  Among other duties, she writes food and nutrition features, expert diet book reviews, provides expert editorial review, develops recipes, delivers webinars and provides nutrition expertise companywide.

Additionally, Zelman serves as the nutrition expert for United Healthcare Source 4 Women and United Healthcare television contributing monthly webinars, articles, recipes and video responses to member questions. She is also a member of the Jamba Juice Healthy Living Council and a Health Professional Advisor to the Egg Nutrition Center providing guidance and expertise on issues of health and wellness.

In 2007, Zelman was awarded the prestigious Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics “Media Excellence Award” for her contribution and commitment to educating consumers about food and nutrition. The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) named Kathleen the 2011 recipient of their “Nutrition Science Media Award” for outstanding science and nutrition journalism. In June, the Institute of Food Technologists awarded her with the 2012 “Media Award for Excellence in Consumer Journalism”.

Zelman has extensive media experience, including co-hosting a weekly radio program for four years, serving twelve years as a national spokesperson for the Academy and over a thousand print and television appearances.  She has contributed to books including Paul Prudhomme’s A Fork in the Road, Healthy Eating for Babies and Toddlers and A Harvest of Healthy Foods.  As a well-respected nutritionist and journalist, Kathleen has served as a judge for nutrition journalism James Beard Awards since 2009.

Zelman is an invited speaker at professional meetings worldwide.  Most recently, she was invited to speak at the National Academy of Sciences Sackler Colloquium on the ‘Science of Science Communication’. In 2012, she shared the stage as the nutrition expert with First Lady Michelle Obama celebrating the second anniversary of Let’s Move.  In June 2011, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack invited five speakers to make comments at the launch of My Plate including Zelman, the only registered dietitian.

Zelman has been a dietetic internship director at Ochsner Medical Institutions and assistant professor at St. Mary’s Dominican College, both in New Orleans.  Zelman is active in local, state and national dietetic associations and currently serves as director at large on the Academy board of directors.  She has served as a trustee on the Georgia Dietetic Foundation and two terms as a delegate to the Academy House of Delegates.  She received her master’s degree in public health from Tulane University and her bachelor of science from Montclair State University.
