The John J. Cali School of Music Opera Workshop Presents: Il giovedi grasso (Carnival Thursday) by Gaetano Donizetti

Directed by Jeffrey Gall

The John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University presents the MSU Opera Workshop on Sunday, May 4th at 3pm in a production of Il giovedi grasso (Carnival Thursday). This rare one-act comic opera by master composer Gaetano Donizetti will be performed in the Alexander Kasser Theater, where all tickets for the performance are only $15.

It is no coincidence that Il giovedì grasso by Gaetano Donizetti, which had its premiere in February 1829, finds its origins in the farcical 1669 Molière comédie-ballet, Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, by way of Eugene Scribe’s reworking of the play for the Paris opera. Donizetti knew his Teatro Nuovo audience would respond well to the screwball spirit of this classic plot of love and deception that teaches the deceivers a good lesson. Modern performances of this work (one of Donizetti’s favored earlier creations) are a rarity and this production serves as the opera’s New Jersey Premiere. Under the direction of Jeffrey Gall, this performance of Donizetti’s Il giovedi grasso, a farsa comica in one act will be staged with beautiful costumes and performed in Italian with piano.

This John J. Cali School of Music event is presented as part of Peak Performances @ Montclair and is also part of the Italian Festival of the Arts and Humanitie at Montclair State University. To order tickets, please visit or call the box office at 973-655-5112.
