DV8 Physical Theatre Returns to the U.S. After 15 Years with “To Be Straight With You”

A searing examination of intolerance, religion and sexuality Oct. 2, 3 at 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 4 at 8:00 p.m.; Oct. 5 at 3:00 p.m.

Marking its first U.S. appearances in 15 years, London’s DV8 Physical Theatre (Oct. 2 to Oct. 5) presents To Be Straight With You; a searing, multimedia examination of intolerance, religion and sexuality based on hundreds of hours of audio interviews with people in the U.K. whose lives are deeply affected by such issues. The work, conceived and directed by DV8’s founder Lloyd Newson, delves into the world of homophobia in the Afro-Caribbean and Islamic communities and how each has marginalized gays and lesbians where physical harm and death can be an everyday reality. Filled with powerful dialogue, dance and true stories, this intense work brings these uncomfortable yet timely issues to the forefront.

This production is co-produced by Maison des Arts de Créteil, the Festival d’Automne in Paris and the National Theatre in London, where it will have an extended run following its Montclair performances.

The performances of To Be Straight With You are part of the critically acclaimed series, Peak Performances @ Montclair State University. To order your tickets, call the Box Office at 973-655-5112 or order online at www.peakperfs.org.
