Football Posts Third Straight Win, 38-14

Danbury, CT (11/1/08) Freshman quarter Tom Fischer (Livingston, NJ) threw three touchdown passes, completed 22 of 28 passes for 293 yards and the Montclair State University football team defeated Western Connecticut State University, 38-14 at Westside Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

Fischer, a Livingston High School graduate, connected on all three touchdowns, a 14-yarder to sophomore tight end David Clapp (Point Pleasant, NJ), a 34-yard scoring toss to freshman Dan Keegan (Fairfield, NJ) and a 20-yard TD to freshman flanker to Byron Lewin (Carteret, NJ) before the Red Hawks went into the locker room with a 24-0 advantage at intermission.

Junior kicker Marco Capozzoli (Bloomfield, NJ) sandwiched a 41-yard field goal around the aerial barrage with 4:29 remaining in the second quarter.   He was a perfect five-of-five on extra-point attempts for a total of eight points on the afternoon. Keegan led all receivers with 81 yards on four catches.  Omar Sevella (North Bergen, NJ) and Jeff Papcun (Hazlet, NJ) each had four catches for 68 and 42 yards, respectively.  Nine different Red Hawks had at least one catch on Saturday.

WestConn would not surrender and came out of the locker room throwing.  Junior quarterback James Williams (Wolcott, CT) found Keith Rosedom (Stamford, CT) open in the flat for a six-yard score with 9:07 remaining in the third quarter.  That completion capped off an 11-play 72-yard drive to begin the second half.  Williams connected with Allan Bowen (Hamden, CT) for the two-point conversion and WestConn trailed, 24-8.   Less than three minutes later, Williams aired it out to Rosedom with a 59-yard touchdown completion down the left sideline.  This time the two-point try was batted away, but the Colonials drew within 10 points, 24-14.

Williams finished the day completing 17 of 35 passes for 181 yards and was picked off once.

Montclair State, 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference clamped down on defense and went on to score two unanswered touchdowns the rest of the way.  Jason Scott (Bayville, NY) recovered a blocked punt on WestConn’s 11 yard line and marched in untouched and Jeff Bliss (New Milford, NJ) capped off a busy day with a 10-yard touchdown run with 9:04 remaining in the game to wrap up the scoring for the Red Hawks.

Bliss finished the day with 23 carries for 78 yards and the one score.  He had 15 carries and 61 yards before the recess.

With WestConn’s ground attack depleted by injuries, Lionel Assie (Bridgeport, CT) had a solid performance with 60 yards on 10 carries. Defensively for WestConn, Angelo Mancini (West Hartford, CT) and Chad Milling (Hartford, CT) had led the way with 10 and nine tackles, respectively.  Ben Bain (Kent, CT) had seven tackles, three and a half tackles for a loss and a sack. Montclair’s defense share the wealth as four different players led the way with four tackles each. Rosedom, had three catches for 73 yards and WestConn’s two scores and returned five kick-offs 122 yards with a long of 30.  Bowen led the receiving corps with seven catches for 57 yards.

The Red Hawks are back home at Sprague Field next Saturday, November 8 as they host Rowan University at 1:00 pm.
