Baseball Beats Rain, John Jay, 12-7

Little Falls, NJ (4/1/09) – Sophomore shortstop Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) drove in a pair of runs while freshman Sam Politan (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) added a bases-clearing double as Montclair State knocked off John Jay College, 12-7 in a seven-inning, rain-shortened game at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior centerfielder Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) had two hits and two runs scored as the Red Hawks fought off a rally in the last inning to improve to 8-9 on the year.

Senior John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) was 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Bloodhounds, who fell to 3-17 on the tear with their fourth consecutive defeat.

Massoni put John Jay on the board two batters into the game as he blasted a 1-1 pitch over the right-field wall for his first home run of the season.

The Red Hawks would respond with four runs in the second to take the lead for good. Boggi tripled to lead off the frame and scored as Jason Lopez (West New York, NJ / Memorial) singled through the left side. Mike Kaminski (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) brought home the next run with a fielder’s choice and Bionde’s sacrifice fly gave Montclair a 3-2 advantage. Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) capped the inning with an RBI triple.

MSU would tack on four more runs in the third. Ed Kloepping (Pennsville, NJ / Pennsville) reached on a walk and base hit respectively, and both came around to score as the Bloodhounds committed the first of their two errors in the game. Adam Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston), who reached on a fielder’s choice, later scored on a balk and Bionde singled home a run to make the score 8-2.

MSU broke open the game with a four-run fifth to take a 12-2 advantage. Matt Hartwick (Ringwood, NJ / Lakeland Regional) reached on a fielder’s choice and Jonathan Trotter (Flanders, NJ / Mount Olive) singled with one out. Joe Zembryski (Rutherford, NJ / St. Peter’s Prep) walked to load the bases and after a second out, Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) singled in the infield for the first run. Politan then clubbed a double to the left field wall clearing the bases as MSU built a 10-run cushion.

But John Jay battled back scoring five times in the seventh – all with two out - as the Bloohounds sent 10 batters to the plate. James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY / IMG Academy) plated the first run with an RBI double and Massoni singled home a second to make the score 12-4. Massoni would score on an error and bases-loaded walks to Tony Cuoco (Franklin Square, NY / H. Frank Carey) and Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY / Sacred Heart) got John Jay within 12-7. But that would be as close as the Bloodhounds would get as a pop up ended the threat and the game was then called due to rain.

Freshman righthander Giovanni Caraballo (Elizabeth, NJ / Elizabeth) picked up the win in relief with two scoreless innings, striking out one and walking one. Caraballo is 1-1. Massoni (1-6) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs and four hits in two innings. He fanned two walked two.

Junior Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum) was 2-for- for John Jay.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 2 as the Red Hawks host Rutgers-Newark in an NJAC matchup at Yogi Berra Stadium at 3:30 pm. John Jay is at Legion Field in Brooklyn, to take on Polytechnic at the same time.
