A passionate audience of more than 1,000 was on hand to state their views and ask questions about the issue of health care at a town hall meeting hosted by Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. on September 3 at Montclair State University’s Memorial Auditorium. For more than two hours beginning at 4:00 p.m., the congressman listened to his constituents, answered questions, and forcefully defended his position as a supporter of the proposed legislation for health care reform.

The audience members—many holding signs for or against health care reform—were given the opportunity to voice their opinions and ask questions, and the exchanges were often lively. More than once, a speaker’s words were drowned out by a chorus of cheers or boos as the audience shared its view of what was being said.

The event was one of several town hall meetings on health care reform hosted by Congressman Pascrell, but marked the first time that he was face-to-face with the audience. The others had been conducted by teleconference.
