Red Hawk Run: a Thanksgiving Tradition for a Good Cause

Now in its ninth year, the 5K Red Hawk Run/Walk has become a campus tradition and a benefit for many in surrounding communities

Continuing a tradition begun nine years ago, Montclair State University’s annual Red Hawk Run/Walk will take place on November 21, 2009, starting at the Student Recreation Center at 10:30 a.m. Also in keeping with tradition, the proceeds from the race will be donated to a local food bank to help provide food to needy families around the Thanksgiving Holiday.

First held in 2000, the Red Hawk Run/Walk has grown from a modest affair with around 30 participants, to a popular Thanksgiving-time campus event that continues to draw larger and larger crowds—more than 100 people participated in 2008. The course has also changed over the years, even going off campus at one time, but this year’s course will be entirely on the Montclair State grounds offering participants scenic fall views of the campus.

Additionally, this year the course has been certified by the USA Track and Field Association so the race can be recorded and nationally ranked. Participants may record their times and compare them to other 5K races they have run.

Although it is a lot of fun, the ultimate purpose of the Red Hawk Run/Walk is to help the less fortunate around Thanksgiving time. The proceeds from the event and donated food items are delivered to the Apostle House in Newark, a food bank that serves needy families and individuals in the area. It is important to help these less fortunate people as they try to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday and it is for this reason that the Red Hawk Run/Walk exists.

Sponsored by the University’s Department of Campus Recreation, the success of the event is due in large part to the sponsors and many volunteers who have been affiliated with the race since its inception. Many groups on campus have donated goods or helped out with the event and the continued support of these groups and individuals has allowed the Red Hawk Run/Walk to take place each year.

Everyone is invited to join in, and share in the tradition while supporting this worthwhile cause. Full information and an entry form are available at Red Hawk Run.
