Women's Soccer Loses NJAC Opener to No. 11 Rowan

Glassboro, NJ (9/18/10) – Forward Jess Babice scored four goals to lead the Rowan University women’s soccer team over Montclair State University, 8-1 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

Babice (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) also had one assist which break the school record for most points in a game with nine.  The old mark was by Bridget Garrity (1995) and Michelle Carrocino (2007) who each had eight points with four goals.  Babice also tied the record for most goals in a game that was shared by Garrity and Carrocino.

Forward Veronica Rhea (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) recorded a school record five assists and she scored one goal. The previous mark was three assists in a game that was shared by six players, including Rhea.  In addition, Rhea has surpassed the career assist record of 21 by Chrystal Feo (1995-98) with 26.  

Rowan also had one goal and one assist midfielders Holly Bundy (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and Michele Ercolano (so. Emerson, NJ/Paramus Catholic).  Midfielder Evynn Wright (jr. Marlton, NJ/Eastern Reg.) contributed with a goal while forward Melanie Wittenberger (so. Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) and back Deandra Turchi (fr. Turnersville, NJ/Paul VI) each added an assist.

Forward Rachel Senyszyn (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) scored Montclair State’s lone goal.  Rowan took 17 shots while Montclair State had four.  Prof goalkeeper Deana Wood (fr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) made two saves in 69:15. Goalie Jillian Brannan (jr. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) played the final 20:45.  For the Red Hawks, goalieMarisa Zayac (so. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) stopped four shots.
The Profs, ranked 11th in the nation and second in the region, have a 5-0-1 record.  The Red Hawks are 3-3-2 overall.  It was the first conference game of the year for both teams.

Babice started the scoring at 13:35 with assists from Rhea and Turchi.  Senyszyn’s goal 23 seconds later tied the score. The Profs were ahead 3-1 after two straight goals by Babice.  She hit the back of the net on a pass from Rhea at 15:38. Babice headed in the third (20:52) with a high pass from Bundy.  Rhea scored at 24:53 on a direct kick after a hand ball foul.  Bundy made the score 5-1 at the half.  She headed in a corner kick with Ercolano and Rhea picking up assists.

In the second half, Babice recorded her fourth goal at 56:59 on a feed from Rhea.  Wright’s goal came on a header at 59:11 with Babice and Rhea getting assists.  With 1:08 left, Ercolano hit the left side of the Red Hawk’s net after a centering pass from Wittenberger.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 22 as the Red Hawks host local rival William Paterson in an NJAC matchup at MSU Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
