Volleyball Sweeps Past Rutgers-Newark

Montclair, NJ (10/7/10)  - Freshman Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) collected eight kills, two service aces and four digs as Montclair State snapped a nine-match losing streak with a three-set victory over Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference volleyball action at the Panzer Athletic Center on Thursday evening.

Freshman libero Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) collected 19 digs and four service aces as the Red Hawks (3-21), improved to 2-3 in the NJAC. 

Junior outside hitter Toni Moppert (Woodcliff Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills) registered a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs for Rutgers-Newark, which had a two-match win streak halted. The Scarlet Raiders fell to 6-11, 1-5 in the conference.

Rutgers-Newark led 21-12 in the opening set before Montclair State scored 13 of the next 15 points to go up 1-0 in the match. An attack error by Rutgers-Newark put the ball in the hands of Irwin, who then served seven straight points, including a pair of aces to get MSU within 21-19. A kill by Moppert ended the run, however the Scarlet Raiders gave it right back with a service error making the score 22-20. Two consecutive attack errors by Moppert tied the score a 22-22 and the Red Hawks took the lead for good on back-to-back kills by Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills)and Cockcroft. Moppert’s kill made it 24-23, however MSU’s Rhianna Ratta (Belleville, NJ / Belleville) ended the set with a kill as Montclair took the first set 25-23. 

In the second set Montclair State seized control with a 9-1 run that turned a 6-6 tie into a 15-7 lead. Alyssa Batiste(Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) gave MSU the lead with a kill and four attack errors in the spurt by Rutgers-Newark gave Montclair the eight point advantage. MSU extended the lead to 21-11 before Rutgers-Newark, which had 11 attack errors in the set, made a run to close within 24-18 on a kill by Moppert. A ball-handling error on set point gave Montclair State a 2-0 advantage in the match. 

Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ / Bogota)
 had four kills and Cockcroft three as Montclair took advantage of 10 Rutgers-Newark attack errors to take the third set 25-17. Topor put down the final kill as MSU posted its first win since a five-set victory over Centenary at the Kean Invitational on September 18. 

Batiste finished with five kills, 11 assists, nine digs and four block assists for Montclair, which got four kills from Girgus. Topor collected six kills and five digs while Bella Milstein (Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) chipped in with six assists and four digs.

Stephanie Touzan (West New York, NJ / Memorial) had 11 kills for the Scarlet Raiders while Jen Mendoza (Lake Hiawatha, NJ / Parsippany) picked up 32 assists along with 13 digs. Rachel Witt (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) had eight kills and Ula Nieznalska (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) added four kills and 17 digs. Libero Rosa Anna Beljour (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) recorded a team-high 18 digs. 

Montclair State is now off until Thursday, October 14 when the Red Hawks host New Jersey City University at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 pm. Rutgers-Newark is in action at Centenary College on Saturday, October 9. The Scarlet Raiders will face The College of Notre Dame (MD) at 2:30 pm followed by a 4:30 pm contest with host Centenary.
