Track's Powell, Baseball's Bowens Named MSU Athletes of the Week for March 28

Montclair, NJ (3/28/11) - Junior track and field standout Ashley Powell (Orange, NJ / Marylawn of the Oranges)and baseball freshman outfielder Anthony Bowens (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) have been named the MSU Athletes of the Week for March 28.

Bowens was named the NJAC Rookie Player of the Week honors after hitting .400 (4-for-10) with two doubles, a home run, two RBI, and five runs scored during three road contests played for the Red Hawks in Ohio. He hit safely in all three games, and started the trip by going 1-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, and two RBI in a 6-5 15-inning defeat to Muskinghum. One day later, he went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI in a 12-8 defeat to John Carroll. He wrapped up the trip by going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in an 11-2 defeat to Marietta. Bowens, For the season, who is hitting .382 with nine runs scored and seven RBI, currently ranks sixth in the NJAC in slugging percentage (.588).

Powell had a fine all-around day for Montclair State as the Red Hawks opened their 2011 outdoor schedule at the Dick Shea Open held at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. Powell won the 200 meters and ran the anchor leg of the Red Hawks’ 4x100 relay team that placed second. Powell posted a time of 26.58 in winning the 200 meters in a race in which the Top 3 finishers were decided by .02 seconds. Powell the teammed with Heather Gearity, Antoinetta Altilio and Tanasia Linton for a time of 51.48 in the 4x100 relay. Powell would also place ninth in the 400 meters (1:03.70) and was 16th in the long jump at 4.47 meters.
