Montclair, NJ (5/2/11) - Seniors Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) of the women's lacrosse team and Mario Morrison-Bird (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) of the men's outdoor track and field team were chosen MSU Athletes of the Week for May 2.
Henderson was named the Skyline Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player as she led Montclair State to its second straight and fifth league crown in the last six years while also securing a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship via the Skyline’s automatic bid. Henderson scored 11 goals and added five draw controls and a ground ball in the two victories. She scored five goals and had a caused turnover in the Red Hawks' 17-4 semifinal win over Kean and then posted six goals along with five draws and a ground ball in the 17-7 championship game win versus Ramapo. Henderson increased her season goal total to 59, the second-highest season total in MSU history. Henderson leads the Skyline Conference in game-winning goals with six and is ranked fourth in goals per game (4.69) and fifth in points per contest (4.19).
Morrison-Bird broke the longest-standing men’s outdoor track and field record as he broke the Montclair State record in the discus at the 177th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA last week. Morrison-Bird finished eighth in the event and registered a throw of 160-feet, 7-inches (48.96 meters), breaking the record held by Dick Shutz, who threw 160-feet, 1-inch in 1965. Morrison-Bird also put his named on the provisional list for next month’s NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held in Delaware, Ohio at Ohio Wesleyan University. Morrison-Bird also competed in the hammer throw and registered a top distance of 48.14 meters (157-ffet, 11-inches). He will lead the MSU men’s team into the 2011 NJAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships which will be held at Ramapo College on Saturday, May 7.
