Men's Team Second, Women Third at Golden Bear Swimming Invitational


Kutztown, PA (11/19/11) – The Montclair State men placed second and the women third as the Red Hawks took part in the Golden Bear Invitational at Kutztown University on Friday and Saturday. The Red Hawk men won 13 events and finished with a total of 677 points while the women collected 425 points.

Junior Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) had an outstanding meet as he won three individual events over the two days while helping four different relays to victories. Westerberg won the 50 freestyle as he led a 1-2 MSU finish with a time of 22.44. Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) was second at 22.50. He later added a win in the 100 backstroke (57.29) and completed a sweep of the backstroke event with a win in the 200 posting a time of 2:04.72.

Westerberg swam the lead leg of the 200 freestyle relay team which won the event with time of 1:29.16. Donny Keenan (Scotch Plains, NJ / St. Joseph's), Nikolas Lumkong (Byrum, NJ / Pope John XXIII) and Long combined on for a time of 1:29.16. The Red Hawks second team of Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford), Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills), Michael Volski (Edison, NJ / Edison) and Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) made it a 1-2 finish with a time of 1:50.96.

Westerberg, Lee, Lumkong and Volski teamed to win the 400 medley relay (3:47.91) and the quartet of Westerberg, Lee, Richard Sang (Stockholm, NJ / Vernon) and Long took top honors in the 200 medley relay (1:43.72).  Finally, Westerberg, Berry, Long and Volski captured the 800 free relay with a time of 7:34.89.

Berry would win both long-distance events as he captured the 500 freestyle (4:59.85) and the 1650 freestyle (17:52.40).  Lee led a 1-2-3 Montclair showing in the 200 individual medley as he swam 2:05.59 with Volski and Keenan timing in at 2:09.04 and 2:09.30, respectively. Lee posted a victory in the 100 breaststroke at 1:01.83 with Keenan coming in second at 1:02.46. The two then reversed spots in the 200 event with times of 2:20.71 and 2:21.79, respectively.

Volski and Long were first and second in the 200 freestyle respectively at 1:52.34 and 1:53.06.

On the women’s side, Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) was second in both the 200 and 400 individual medley. Abner swam 2:18.84 in the 200 event and went 5:00.48 in the 400 medley.  Junior Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) registered three second-place finishes of her own in the 50 freestyle (25.60), 100 freestyle (56.17) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.04).

Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor Township) finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:23.56) and Maria Vira (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:37.09). Donahue was second in the 200 backstroke (2:23.56).

Donahue, Abner, Vira and Vallone helped the 200 medley relay team to third place with a time of 1:59.39.   
Montclair State is now off until Monday, December 5 when they host Seton Hall University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool beginning at 5:00 pm.
