Swimming and Diving Battles Division I Foes in Final Meet of 2011


Jersey City, NJ (12/9/11) – The Montclair State swimming and diving team closed out the 2011 portion of their schedule on Friday evening as the Red Hawks took on Division I opponents St. Peter’s College and Manhattan College at SPC’s Yanitelli Center Pool on Friday evening.

The Red Hawks women split the tri-meet downing Manhattan College 123-89 while falling to the host Peahens, 131-81. MSU’s men’s squad fell to both squads with a 146-70 loss to St. Peter’s and 125-91 loss against Manhattan College. The women are now 3-5 overall while the men fell to 2-6.

Sophomore Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) was victorious in the 500 freestyle as he swam 5:06.50 in addition to
coming in second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.94. Junior Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) and junior Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) led a sweep of the 50 freestyle for MSU as they won the event with times of 25.12 and 22:03, respectively.

Diver Lauren Corrente (Nyack, NY / Nyack) won the one-meter event posting a score of 323.78 points.

Vallone added a second in the 100 freestyle (55.22) with Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) taking second in the 500 freestyle (5:40.67) and 200 individual medley (2:18.79). Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor Township) placed second in the 1000 freestyle (11:49.20 and Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) was second in the 100 freestyle (49.47).

The women’s 200 medley relay team finished second with a time of 1:58.58.

Montclair State is now off from competitive action until January 16 when the men return against New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. The men also face Vassar at home two days later (January 18) with the full squad in action on Friday, January 20 at New York University.
