Tobie, August Named First MSU Athletes of the Week for 2012

Montclair, NJ (1/3/12) - Basketball forwards Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) and Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ / Roselle Catholic), who have won seven combined NJAC weekly honors this season, were chosen as the first MSU Athlete of the Week award winners for 2012.

August was a key factor in helping Montclair State run its record to 11-3 on the year with three wins. A three-time MSU Athlete of the Week winner this season, he had 14 points and seven rebounds as the Red Hawks beat Immaculata at home 104-64 on December 20. The following week he was named MVP of the Comfort Inn Holiday Classic as Montclair stretched its win streak to four with a pair of wins. August had 23 points, five rebounds, four assists, six blocks and three steals in MSU's 90-53 semifinal win over Lehman. He then notched his seventh double-double of the year with 23 points and 11 rebounds along with seven assists as the Red Hawks claimed the championship with an 87-64 victory in the title game. August, named NJAC Player of the Week for the third time this year, currently ranks third in the NJAC in scoring (20.4), second in rebounding (9.8) and fourth in field goal percentage (.556).

Tobie, who is named MSU Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, helped the Red Hawks to three wins over the Holiday break averaging 16.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 blocks per contest. She scored 12 points and had eight rebounds and three blocks as Montclair downed Forsbturg State on December 19. Tobie then had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in a 74-72 victory against Widener in the Land of Magic Classic on December 29. One day later, she notched her fifth 20-point game of her freshman season with 22 markers, six rebounds, and a career-high seven assists in a 70-55 victory over Hamilton. She shot 14-of-27 (52 percent) from the floor and connected on 20-of-24 attempts (.833) at the foul line as MSU ran its winning streak to six games while upping its record to 8-4. Tobie, who was named the NJAC Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season, currently ranks fourth in the NJAC in scoring with an average of 17.0 points per game.
