Nappe, Chesterman Lead Montclair Over No. 25 Millsaps in Season Opener, 14-7

– Junior third baseman Stephen Nappe (Edison, NJ, Edison) belted a three-run homer and drove in four runs while junior first baseman Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ, Bloomfield) homered and added three RBI as Montclair State scored 11 runs over the first two innings en route to a 14-7 win over No. 25 Millsaps College at the Piedmont Spring Break Tournament on Saturday.

Junior leftfielder Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ, Park Ridge) had two hits and three RBI as the Red Hawks banged out 11 hits in the first of three games in the tournament.

Senior lefthander Sean Hille (Edison, NJ, St. Joseph's (Metuchen)) earned the win as he pitched the first five innings allowing five runs (three earned) and nine hits, striking out three and walking two. Junior righthander Jake Campbell (Sayreville, NJ, Sayreville) and freshman righty Anthony Altieri (Montville, NJ, Montville) each threw a scoreless inning for the Red Hawks.

The Red Hawks jumped out early scoring five times in the opening inning. Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ , Morristown) drew a leadoff walk, stole second with one out and scored as Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) singled. Pace moved to second on balk and came around to score as Moreno singled. After a strikeout, Chesterman blasted a three-run homer as MSU led 5-0.

Montclair would add six more runs in the second. Nappe drew a bases-loaded walk to score the first run and Moreno singled in two as MSU led 8-0. Andrew Rigassio (Maplewood, NJ, Columbia) doubled in two runs and Matt Chotkowski (Hamilton, NJ , Nottingham)’s fielder’s choice delivered the final run as the Red Hawks led 11-0.

Millsaps would score three runs in the third and two more in the second to cut the lead to 11-5 however Nappe answered that with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth for a 14-5 advantage.

Chesterman was 3-for-4 for Montclair while Moreno collected two hits. Pace and Nappe each scored three runs while McGraw drew three walks.
