In the Summertime in the Big Apple Pre-College Program at Montclair State University, students spend five days learning about the architecture, and history of New York City—all while touring the city’s streets. During daytime tours of the city, we’ll also eat at some of New York City’s finest ethnic restaurants. In addition, students attend a matinee showing of Hamilton the Musical and a dinner afterwards.
Guided by published, expert historians, you will:
- Understand the ethnic history of New York City.
- Learn the history of New York City’s built environment.
- Comprehend the importance of food to New York City’s ethnic groups.
- Complete a digital photographic essay that documents your excursions in New York City./li>
- Visit museums and public history sites throughout Manhattan.
Sample Program Schedule
Monday
Explore the architecture and built environment of New York City with visits to the Skyscraper Museum and the Empire State Building. The museum will provide you with the tools to explore the city on foot throughout the week.
Tuesday
Learn the history of European immigration to New York City at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, and eat lunch at Katz’s Delicatessen, the most popular deli in New York City.
Wednesday
Study the African American History of New York City at The African Burial Ground, a National Park Site. Eat lunch at Shanghai 21 in Chinatown, then attend a matinee showing of Hamilton the Musical at 2pm. Afterwards, enjoy dinner at Valla Table Thai in nearby Hell’s Kitchen.
Thursday
Walk the West Village, view the High Line and historic Stonewall National Monument. Eat a New York style pizza lunch at John’s of Bleeker, one of the best pizzerias in the United States.
Friday
Investigate immigrant New York City at the Museum of Chinese in America and the Tenement Museum in the morning, followed by lunch in Little Italy.
