Pursuant to Section 485(f) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. § 1092(f)), as amended by the Campus Hazing Transparency provisions of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the University is required to publicly disclose information regarding substantiated hazing misconduct involving student organizations. This federal requirement is intended to promote campus safety, accountability, and transparency, and to support informed decision making by students, families, and the campus community.
The information provided below includes the name of the student organization, the date or date range of the alleged hazing conduct if known, the date the incident was reported to the University, the dates of the investigation, the date the organization was found responsible for hazing, and a summary of the institutional findings. In accordance with federal law, the disclosure also identifies whether the hazing violation involved the abuse or illegal use of alcohol or drugs and the date the University provided notice to the student organization that the conduct resulted in a hazing violation. Unless otherwise specified, the date of the responsible finding corresponds to the date notice was issued to the student organization.
Only incidents that resulted in a finding of responsibility for hazing are included in this disclosure. Reports that did not result in a finding of responsibility are not published.
The University updates this information following the conclusion of the fall and spring academic semesters and maintains the disclosures for a period of ten years from the date of initial publication, as required under federal law.
Hazing is also prohibited under New Jersey law. New Jersey Statutes Annotated 2C:40-3 criminalizes conduct that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of another person in connection with initiation into or membership in an organization. Violations of this statute may result in criminal penalties in addition to University disciplinary action.
Hazing Policy Statement
The University prohibits hazing in any form. Hazing is strictly forbidden whether it occurs on or off campus and regardless of an individual’s willingness to participate.
Definition of Hazing and Prohibited Conduct
- Hazing is defined as any action or situation, whether occurring on or off campus, in connection with the recruitment, initiation, admission, affiliation, or continued membership in a student organization, that places or may place an individual at risk of physical, emotional, or psychological harm, demonstrates indifference or disregard for the rights, dignity, or well being of another, or violates University policy or applicable law. Consent is not a defense to hazing.
- Prohibited conduct includes but is not limited to activities that involve physical harm, psychological distress, coercion, humiliation, degradation, forced or pressured consumption of alcohol or other substances, sleep deprivation, intimidation, restriction of movement or communication, participation in unlawful activities, or any behavior that interferes with an individual’s academic or personal wellbeing.
How to Report Hazing
The University encourages all members of the campus community to report suspected hazing via the Student Conduct Public Incident Report or through University Police. Reports may be made by individuals who experience hazing, witnesses, or third parties.
Investigation Process
Reports of hazing are reviewed and investigated in accordance with University procedures. Investigations may involve collaboration among University Police, Student Conduct, and other appropriate offices. Student organizations found responsible for hazing may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension, loss of recognition, or other sanctions as permitted under University policy.
