In order to major in Athletic Training, all students enter Montclair State University and may CONDITIONALLY declare Athletic Training (ATTR) as their major. During the first year, students must take or show completion of the following:

Fall Semester
Fall Semester
*BIOL244 Anatomy and Physiology of Mammals I
*BIOL245 Anatomy and Physiology of Mammals II
ATTR199 Orientation to Athletic Training
ATTR150 Emergency Care in Athletic Training

Note: Anatomy and Physiology may be transferred in.

At the end of the spring semester students will be required to apply to the major. Admission at this time is limited to 24 students and is competitive.  Due to University policies if you are not admitted then you may not reapply.

Minimum application requirements:

  • Overall GPA of 2.75 or better.
  • Completion of ATTR 199, ATTR 150, BIOL 244, and BIOL 245 with a grade of “C” or better.
  • Completion of the application. Applications are made available in ATTR 150 or by contacting the Athletic Training Program Coordinator (Dr. Fredrick Gardin, ATC at and are due by May 1st. Applications are only accepted online.

The application includes:

  • Personal statement
  • Current Professional Rescuer/Health Care Provider level CPR & AED certification.
  • A current physical examination.
  • Meeting with ATEP faculty
  • Completion of:
    • Technical Standards agreement.
    • Athletic Training education program student agreement.
    • Confidentiality agreement.
    • Discipline policy agreement.
    • OSHA standards agreement. 

Retention in the ATTR major requires maintaining an overall GPA of 2.75, completion of clinical education requirements, and compliance with professional ethics.
