Teacher Education in the English department offers students several paths to a career in teaching at elementary and secondary levels. Students must apply to the Teacher Education program.

Undergraduate Programs
- English major with Teacher Certification in English (Preschool-Grade 12)
- English major with Certification in Elementary School Teaching (Grades K-6)
- Combined BA in English/MAT in Teaching (with options for Grades K-6 Elementary Education and Preschool-Grade 12 Subject Area Specialization)
Joint Degree Programs
We now offer our BA in English/MA in English joint degree program. Unlike the Combined MAT program, students pursue teacher certification as part of the BA portion of the program. See our BA/MA page and Curriculum Guides for more information.
Master of Arts in Teaching
If you already have a Bachelor’s degree in English and would like to become an English teacher, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is your most direct path.
