Students holding Día de los muertos masks

On November 2, 2018, a group of students representing the Department of Spanish and Latino Studies visited Bradford Elementary in Montclair to celebrate Day of the Dead with almost seventy 5th graders. MSU students (left to right) Yareli Arreola, Cristina Moricete, Rosa Sanchez Perez, Charlie Lopez, Michelle Suarez, Enmanuel Lopez and Matthew Berg collaborated with Spanish teacher Mrs. Judith Grodner to create a memorable event for the children. MSU students shared about how the holiday is celebrated in several Spanish-speaking countries and brought supplies for students to create their own masks in honor of the day. In addition, Jackie Burkat, a flautist pursuing her MAT in music, performed for the students and taught them a song in Spanish. It was a wonderful opportunity to jointly celebrate the Spanish language and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
