Portuguese Program

The main goal of the minor in Portuguese Studies is to provide students with instruction in and understanding of the Portuguese language and the fundamental literary, cultural and social-historical constructs of the Portuguese speaking cultures. The minor proposes to impart to students an appreciation for the diversity of the Lusophone culture and its international contribution.

Why should you study Portuguese?

  • Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world. It is the language of over 200 million people in many different countries, such as Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, East Timor, and parts of India and China.
  • Job advantage: Brazil is part of BRICS (an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), a group of emerging economies in the world.
  • Local opportunities: New Jersey has one of the biggest and most important communities of Portuguese speakers in the United States. In the United States, the community of Portuguese speakers amount to more than 1.5 million Americans.
  • Culture and Tourism: Brazil is hosting the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016 and Portugal is one of the most beautiful and financially reasonable destinations in Europe.

  • The Portuguese Studies minor is an 18 credit interdisciplinary program with courses taught in Portuguese as well as in English relating to literature, history, culture, and political science.
  • The Portuguese Studies minor integrates academics and extra curricular activities through the Portuguese Language and Culture Club which hosts guest speakers, musicians, dancers, and film directors as well as conversational hours, soccer games, and bake sales.
  • The Portuguese Studies program is staffed by committed and devoted faculty sensitive to the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of all students.
