Chemistry Prerequisites
Prerequisites for General Chemistry I (CHEM 120)
There are two separate prerequisites for CHEM 120 and all students must meet both prerequisites.
MATHEMATICS PREREQUISITE:
A satisfactory score on the Mathematics Readiness Test OR completion of MATH 100 (Intermediate Algebra) with a grade of C- or better. Information about the Mathematics Readiness test can be found at: http://www.montclair.edu/student-development-campus-life/center-academic-development-assessment/placement-tests/math-Readiness-tests/. All arrangements for the Mathematics Readiness test are made through the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Continuing Students, Visiting Students and Transfer Students must provide documentation to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of completion of this prerequisite before being allowed to register in CHEM 120.
CHEMISTRY PREREQUISITE:
A satisfactory score on the Chemistry Readiness Test OR completion of CHEM 106 (Principles of Chemistry) with a grade of C- or better. Visit Chemistry Readiness Test for full details.
Continuing Students, Visiting Students and Transfer Students can make arrangements through the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry to take the Readiness Test. Please contact Dr. M. L. Kasner (973-655-7121 or kasnerm@mail.montclair.edu) to make an appointment to take the Test. Students who have taken CHEM 120 in the past and failed the course, must take the Readiness test before re-enrolling. Students who earned a grade of D in CHEM 120 can retake the course without taking the Readiness Test.
All Readiness Testing for incoming freshman students is handled by the Center for Academic Development and Assessment (CADA).
