Theme: Toward an Engaged University
Date: May 5, 2026
In this 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the question of what sustains an educated, engaged citizenry has never felt more urgent.
Montclair 250 has highlighted the importance of an educated citizenry to the ongoing American experiment. As an R2 public university with Carnegie designations of Community Engagement and Leadership for Public Purpose, and as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and Minority-Serving Institution, Montclair is uniquely positioned to lead this conversation.
The faculty are central to this work. Every day, through your teaching, research, and community partnerships, you help shape the habits of mind and civic capacities that a healthy democracy requires.

The May 2026 Faculty Showcase Call for Papers
The May Faculty Showcase, sponsored by the Provost’s Office through the Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) and the Center for Teaching and Academic Innovation (CTAI), among others, seeks to bring this work of supporting a healthy democracy into view, not only to celebrate it, but to create strong communities around it. For this showcase to fulfill its purpose, it requires more than presenting your work. It depends on our willingness to engage with one another’s scholarship, to be present to our colleagues, and to participate in the intellectual life of the university as a shared enterprise.
We invite proposals for presentation or interactive sessions that highlight how your scholarship, pedagogy, or community engagement contributes to preparing students for lives of civic purpose and to strengthening democratic values in our local context and in the larger world.
The Showcase will take place on campus on May 5, 2026.
Please submit a proposal, including an abstract of 150-200 words, by April 10; participants will be notified by April 17.
Possible Categories:

Vision for the May Showcase
This event is more than a venue for sharing your work. It is a chance to:
- Build new collaborations with colleagues across departments, schools, colleges and disciplines
- Discover fresh ideas for your teaching, research and public service by seeing what others are doing
- Contribute to a campus-wide conversation about Montclair’s role in shaping the next 250 years
The May Faculty Showcase is intended to be a true gathering of our academic community. Its success depends on broad participation—not only from those presenting, but from those who join to listen, learn, and engage. We are intentionally building in time for conversation, reflection, and networking because the most transformative ideas emerge when we show up for one another.
*Presenters must be employed by Montclair State University
