STEM Pioneers receive preferred registration for two courses that are designed to help students explore the intersection of science and cultural concepts. Each course encourages students to think outside of what they may already believe about the fields of science in a way that enhances the learning experience throughout their academic exploration while in the program. These courses will satisfy general education requirements.
This course addresses scientific literacy for students who have an interest in science. CSAM 101 – Science Matters! explores not only scientific content, but also issues in society that are influenced by science. The goal of this course is to prepare students to think critically and to understand the process of science before they choose to declare a science major or not.
Students will be introduced to scientific thinking, processes and research through investigation of public, social, and cultural issues that may affect them locally, nationally, and globally. Students will be empowered to conduct research, investigate claims, locate and validate scientific data and sources, question cultural myths, and expand their scientific literacy.
