New Student Checklist

Congratulations on your acceptance
to the Degree Completion Program!

Welcome to Montclair State, and welcome back to your undergraduate studies! We have compiled a checklist of things you will need to do as you enroll as a student in the Degree Completion Program. We encourage you to use this website regularly as a resource, and to become better acquainted with the other resources the University has to offer.

1. First Steps

Know Your Campus Wide ID (CWID) and PIN

Your acceptance letter to the University will include your CWID and PIN. Your PIN is your six-digit birthday (MMDDYY). You will need these to submit your New Student Deposit.

If you have any questions about this step, or have misplaced your CWID or PIN, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 973-655-4444 for assistance.

Set Up Your NetID and Email

Your NetID acts as your Montclair State email account login ID and your ID for other web-based University systems. You will receive an email with instructions once your New Student Deposit is processed and you can establish (activate) your NetID. Please note, your NetID cannot be activated until you submit your deposit.

Please activate your NetID within 1-2 business days after submitting your new student deposit.

Once your NetID has been activated, you will begin receiving communications to your Montclair State email account from your advisor and other University staff. To log in, please visit gmail.com, enter your NetID@montclair.edu, use your NetID password and click “Sign in.”

For more information, please contact the University Information Technology Help Desk at 973-655-7971, Option 1, or visit their website.

2. Submit Your Final Transcripts

You must submit an official transcript from ALL regionally accredited colleges and/or universities you previously attended. Official transcripts must be sent to the University from your previous institution; transcripts submitted by students are not official. Please contact your previous institution to have them send your official transcript.

Official transcripts may be submitted electronically to transfermsu@montclair.edu or via mail to:

Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Montclair State University
1 Normal Ave., Susan A. Cole Hall
Montclair, NJ 07043

Questions about this step? Contact Lisa Williams, Transfer Admission Counselor, via email at williamsli@montclair.edu, or the Office of Undergraduate Admissions via phone at 973-655-4444.

3. Advising and Registration

Log In to NEST

NEST is the primary web gateway for your student self-service. Here, you can access your degree audit, pay your term bills and view payment history, register for classes, schedule appointments with your academic Success Coach and more.

Log in to NEST by visiting nest.montclair.edu and entering your NetID and password.

Learn more about NEST here.

Advising and Registration

Start smart! Be sure to schedule an advising appointment with your academic Success Coach. Your Success Coach will guide you through the transfer credit evaluation process and help you select your courses for your first semester at Montclair State.

To schedule an advising appointment, please contact us via email at degreecompletion@montclair.edu, via phone at 973-655-7114 or by scheduling an appointment on Navigate.

Review Your Degree Audit

To learn how courses are transferred to Montclair State and to understand their course equivalencies, log in to NEST. Once logged in, navigate to Degree Works to view your degree audit.

Your degree audit displays all of the accepted credits transferred into the university, your degree requirements, and completed coursework.

4. Financing Your Education

Financial Aid

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for student loans, which are the primary funding source for students. Financial aid includes scholarships, grants, loans and work-study from federal, state and institutional sources. Applying for financial aid reduces the out-of-pocket cost of a college education to help make it an affordable reality.

Log In to Canvas

As online students in the Degree Completion Program, you will access your online coursework in Canvas, an accessible online learning management system.

Canvas is where you will learn more about your specific courses, complete and submit assignments, review syllabi, view grades throughout the semester, connect with peers and instructors in your courses, and more.

You can log into Canvas by visiting montclair.instructure.com and using your NetID and password to access your courses.

Attend Virtual New Student Orientation

New students in the Degree Completion Program are encouraged to attend a Virtual New Student Orientation session to become better acclimated with the department, learn more about different coursework and concentrations, and to connect with peers, faculty and staff in the program and in University College.
