Mediation Resource Center

Through a joint effort between Residential Education and Services and the Department of Counseling and Educational Leadership, we were able to create the Mediation Resource Center, which opened in Fall 2012. This Center was developed to make a difference in 1) helping students learn life skills for dealing with conflict; 2) intervening into conflict situations before they escalate causing distress for students; 3) assistance with the adjustment to college  and 4) assisting in retention of students.

The Center offers an online Blackboard course that all resident students must take prior to moving into the residence halls. This course offers students suggestions for communicating with their roommate before moving in, diversity, helping to prevent conflict, and resources on campus. This program has helped to change the culture of Montclair State University from a culture of roommate conflict leads to an immediate room change to roommate conflicts leading to talking to each other and trying to work through the issue. Through this work, Res Ed has seen a reduction in the amount of roommate conflicts that result in room changes. Working together has changed a reactive process into a proactive one that eliminates conflicts before they arise. As a result of the joint effort between Residential Education and the Department of Counseling and Educational Leadership, graduate assistants now have a unique opportunity to get practical experience in their field.
