Student Employment

The Office of Residential Education and Services is the largest student staff employer on the Montclair State University campus. Montclair State residents have the unique opportunity to apply for one of our many student staff positions inside our residence hall communities. These positions have provided our residents with unique leadership roles on campus. Residential Education and Services student staff members are trained in many aspects of student development and administrative tasks. Upon graduation, staff members walk away as campus leaders with counseling, mediation, supervision, management and decision-making experience, all of which are transferable skills that become assets in any field they wish to pursue. The positions available include:

COMMUNITY ASSISTANT
Reporting directly to the Community Director, the Community Assistant is responsible for the day to day interaction and development of the students who reside in the residence halls.  General responsibilities include: maintaining a safe and secure environment for resident students, student community development, educational programming, and associated administrative responsibilities.

SERVICE ASSISTANT
The Service Assistant (SA) is a staff member of the Office of Residential Education and Services. It is the responsibility of the SA to ensure an enthusiastic, inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all residents and guests of the assigned community. The SAs are responsible for ensuring a secure community, by allowing building access only to residents and their properly signed in guests. The SA is expected to act as a representative of the department and to utilize proper service etiquette when addressing the needs of all residents, staff members, and guests within the Montclair State Campus Community.

FACILITIES ASSISTANT
The Facilities Assistant (FA) is a staff member of the Office of Residential Education and Services.  It is the responsibility of the FA to assist with a wide range of responsibilities focusing on housing operations and residential maintenance. The FA is expected to act as a representative of the department and to utilize proper service etiquette when addressing the needs of all residents, staff members, and guests within the Montclair State Campus Community.  The Facilities Assistant position is approximately a 10-20 hour per week commitment. 

ACADEMIC ASSISTANT
The Academic Assistant position is approximately a 20 hour per week commitment. The Academic Assistant is an undergraduate, staff member of the Office of Residential Education and Services.  It is the responsibility of the Academic Assistant to ensure and encourage academic success within the designated residential community. Academic Assistants work to support resident students by providing academic success mentoring, an in-hall curriculum, participation in community-based activities, engaging students in campus life, connecting students to academic departments, and supporting the overall mission of the Department of Residential Education and Services. The Academic Assistant is expected to serve as a representative of the department and to utilize proper service etiquette when addressing the needs of all residents, staff members, and guests within the Montclair State University Campus Community. The AA will receive a stipend.
