Students for Equality in Education (SEED) is a group of students that have come together to initiate a collaborative response to what we have identified as a critical issue in education. We believe that the achievement gap presents itself as one of the most immediate, observable manifestations of institutionalized bias in society, prevalent in even some of our most progressive institutions. The achievement gap is an issue of social justice. To ignore this problem is a crime against democracy, and against America’s children. Mission and GoalsThe mission of this organization is to support existing efforts to promote equality of educational outcomes while exploring new, student-generated avenues for such efforts. We seek to promote the achievement of children that are affected by the gap through our immediate efforts, and indirectly by fostering non-biased teaching practices in the next generation of teachers. In the process, we hope to create a space where students can dialogue about these issues outside of class. We recognize that for our efforts to have any significant impact students need to emerge as leaders, both in higher education and at the secondary level. For this reason, members of SEED act as agents in fostering critical, engaged citizenship in the campus community and beyond. With the aim of transforming scattered, uncoordinated efforts into a real movement, our activities are carried out according to two initiatives: Student Leaders in Education (leadership training and experience): The purpose of this initiative is to foster in students the personal growth and professional competence that is necessary for effective leadership in the field of education and within the realm of community out-reach. Students for Equality in Education (scholarship infused with the spirit of activism): The purpose of this initiative is to create a mutually beneficial relationship between the Montclair State University student community and advocates of equality in education within and about our local school districts. In particular, our goals will be to strengthen and expand existing school-university partnerships and to explore the potential for a new mode of Service-Learning which incorporates a more explicit research dynamic. Executive Board/Contact
BackgroundIn the Spring of 2004, Jordan Fullam and Andrea Vecchione participated in Montclair State University’s Service-Learning program while enrolled in a required English Education course. Through this experience, both students witnessed the achievement gap and were inspired to research and organize events in response. By the summer Jordan contacted Andrea about a proposed organization, Students for Equality in Education/Student Leaders in Education (SEED/SLED), which was to commence with a symposium featuring keynote speaker Dr. Pedro Noguera. Since then they have received positive support and interest in the organization, including affiliation with the Center of Pedagogy and the Montclair Education Association, and Citizen Scholarship awards with the Center for Community-Based Learning. Jordan and Andrea plan to continue with the succession of the SEED/SLED organization with the goal of bringing their research into surrounding school districts.* SEED/SLED is a Class III organization of the S.G.A.
