Montclair’s strategy for faculty recruitment and search is guided by the commitments expressed in the University Mission Statement (2025), which articulate the future direction of the institution and expectations for faculty as intellectual leaders. Search committees are encouraged to keep those commitments at the forefront of decision making and to ask throughout the process: Who can help the University fulfill these commitments?
As a human enterprise driven by the exchange of ideas, higher education depends on faculty and students learning with and from one another. Montclair faculty frequently note how the diversity of student identities, experiences, and perspectives enriches their teaching and scholarship, and the University seeks a faculty body whose social identities similarly deepen learning, broaden perspectives, and strengthen the academic community for generations of students.
The Office of the Provost leads all faculty and librarian hiring at Montclair State University and provides guidance, resources, and consultation throughout the search process. Working closely with Human Resources, the Office offers guidelines, tools, and templates to support hiring managers and search committees from position inception and approval through recruitment, selection, and onboarding. Committee members may contact Mary Colon, Assistant Vice President for Academic Personnel Services, or Emily Isaacs, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, with any questions.
Additional support is available through the Faculty Hiring Best Practices course and a facilitator training for search chairs and search committees. These resources guide search leads and committee members through each stage of the process, offering updated guidance and empirically grounded best practices for conducting effective searches.
