MSW Full-time Program (2 Years)

The MSW is a 60-credit Program

Full-time program: 2 years

The MSW full-time program is a 2 year program starting in Fall semester. All courses are 3 credits. Students take 5 courses (15 credits) per semester (Fall / Spring). There may be opportunity to take some electives during Summer sessions to lessen the academic year load (Fall/ Spring).

Year 1 (Fall and Spring): Students receive comprehensive training in generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.Students become familiar with prevention and intervention methods designed to promote client well-being, based on scientific inquiry and best practices. Course topics include diversity, oppression, social justice, policy, assessment and diagnosis, human behavior and research. Students also participate in a supervised practicum approximately 15 hours per week.

Year 2 (Fall and Spring): Students obtain training in specialized clinical practice with children, youth and families. Course topics include clinical practice, family interventions, child and family policy, and child abuse and neglect. Students also participate in a supervised clinical practicum at an agency serving children, adolescents and/or families for approximately 21 hours per week.

** Students may choose to take up to two electives in the summer. At least one elective should be clinical for clinical license requirements.

Academic Credit for Life/Work Experience

Please note that MSU does not grant any academic credit for life experience or previous work experience. This applies to all required and elective courses in the MSW program (two-year and Advanced Standing), and to practicum education hours. No exceptions to this policy will be granted for any reason.
