Matt Horutz ’98 and Tara Keating ’99
While attending Montclair State University, Matt Horutz ’98 was the Music Director and on-air DJ at the university’s radio station, 90.3 WMSC. At the beginning of the spring 1997 semester, he was paired with a new apprentice, Tara Keating ’99. When the Program Director first told Matt the news, he half-jokingly protested, worried that he’d have to slow his show down to accommodate the new apprentice and focus on teaching her rather than solely on the show. She arrived the following week and Matt was instantly stunned by her looks. But it wasn’t just her looks that attracted Matt to Tara. As they spent more time together, the pair found that they had similar musical interests. They traded mix tapes and began spending free time together regularly. Once Tara passed her on-air test and became a DJ with her own show, she and Matt would guest star on each other’s programs. Tara then joined the Music Department at the radio station.
They began dating in February 1998. Matt graduated in the Fall 1998 semester and Tara graduated in the Spring 1999 semester. They both walked at the 1999 Commencement ceremony. Tara and Matt got married in November 2004 and became the proud parents of their daughter, Annie, in May 2007. The couple returns to Montclair State every spring to participate in WMSC’s Alumni Week. They look forward to this chance to do their show again every year and even brought Annie to campus in 2010 to show her where they met.
Debra ’83, ’91 MA and William Tomaszewski ’82
Debra ’83, ’91 MA and William Tomaszewski ’82 aren’t just a couple; they’re a team. Together, they operate the Marin Bee Company, a San Francisco-based business committed to protecting and replenishing Honeybee populations by promoting organic beekeeping. Debra and William met as undergraduates at Montclair State University. They both have fond memories of attending school there. They met in the Student Center Cafeteria, where Debra worked. When they saw the demise of the bee population, they decided to act to create a healthier future for their children. Today, they create organic honey-based products and educate the public about how important it is to help preserve the environment and natural bee populations.
