The Department of Secondary and Special Education grants two Master of Arts in Teaching degrees and two Master of Education in special education degrees.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) – Subject Area

In the NCATE-accredited MAT – Subject Area, students are prepared to teach with diverse populations in different content areas.

In addition, the department offers a Post-baccalaureate option for initial certification, which meets the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Education.

In the NCATE-accredited MAT – Subject Area – Teacher of Students with Disabilities (MAT – Content Area – TSD), students are prepared to teach diverse populations in different content areas.

Special Education

MEd in Special Education

In the nationally-accredited Master of Education in Special Education (MEd SPED), certified teachers are able to gain an additional certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities.

In addition, the department offers a post-baccalaureate option for additional certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD), which meets the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Education.

MEd in Learning Disabilities

In the nationally-accredited Master of Education in Learning Disabilities (MEd LD), certified teachers are able to develop the knowledge and competencies required to become an expert in the assessment and instruction of children with learning disabilities, and obtain the Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDTC) certification.

In addition, the department offers a post- master's program for an advanced certification in Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDTC) is also available.

Applicants interested in obtaining a teacher certification or master's degree in the area of Early Childhood or Elementary Education (P-3 or K-8) should visit the department of Early Childhood, Elementary and Literacy Education.
