Red Hawk Open

Montclair State University’s Sixth Annual Red Hawk Open took place on Monday, September 17, at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield. More than 130 golfers came out for a beautiful day on the course to benefit Montclair State Athletic teams and programs, raising nearly $110,000.

The funds will be allocated to each of the 18 varsity athletic programs to assist with each program’s individual needs that include travel, equipment or special events.

The day began with a BBQ lunch that gave participants a chance to mingle with one another before gathering on the course for the scramble format event. After hitting the links, golfers and guests enjoyed an evening of cocktails, dinner, silent auction, and an awards ceremony.

At the dinner, Vice President for University Advancement John T. Shannon offered greetings from the University and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Holly Gera ’79 gave an update on the athletics program. Representing all Montclair State student athletes, George Alexandris spoke about his experiences and thanked donors for the support. Alexandris captured the national long jump championship at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May.

For the silent auction, guests were invited to bid on a variety of items including sports memorabilia, golf foursomes and other fun packages. Some of the hot ticket items were a New York Rangers Autographed Henrik Lundqvist Jersey, as well as a number of gift baskets. For the second year in a row, the 50/50 Raffle raised over $5,800. The winner of the raffle generously donated the winnings back to Montclair State University Athletics.

“Montclair State University athletic staff and student athletes appreciate the generosity of the outing participants and the consistent support from donors and friends, says Gera. “Proceeds from this event and other donations enable us to enhance the athletic experience for all of our student athletes.”

Event sponsors included New Jersey Orthopaedic Institute, Hackensack UMC Mountainside, Terminal Construction Corporation, Inserra Supermarkets, Inc., Schumacher Chevrolet Auto Group, Follett and Montclair State University Dining/Chartwells, PSEG, Universal Electric Motor Service, Inc., Big Shine Energy, Valley National Bank, Mediassociates, New York Life, Rockland Bakery, as well as several hole sponsors.
