Nearly 140 alumni and friends of the University gathered on Tuesday, April 16, for the 9th Annual Signature Wine Tasting. Focusing on French wines, attendees were given an overview of the region and its history, learned the basics of tasting wine and sampled various light, medium and full-bodied wines.

In addition to alumni and their guests, members of the Class of 2019 were also invited to their first official alumni event. Several parents also attended the event, which allowed time for networking and socializing both before and after the presentation began.

“The wine tasting event was my first one ever. The sommelier was very informative and knowledgeable,” says Nathaniel Adomako ’19. “I also enjoyed and had fun interacting with Montclair State alumni from different class years.”

Jeanne Marano, assistant vice president for Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement, kicked off the evening by welcoming and thanking everyone in attendance for their continued support. She gave a brief update on Soar, The Campaign for Montclair State University and introduced the campaign video.

“Through greater endowments and annual support, promising students are able to receive scholarships, faculty have the resources to conduct groundbreaking research that addresses society’s needs and the University continues to provide a vibrant educational environment to prepare tomorrow’s leaders,” Marano noted.

She introduced Gerry Piserchia, the sommelier for the evening. He is currently the director of Education for Fedway Associates Inc., a wine and spirit wholesaler in New Jersey.

Several Alumni Campus Employees were in attendance as well. As our best ambassadors for the University, these alumni dedicate their time and talents to the campus community. Attendees included Kathleen Ragan ’74, ’80 MA, associate vice president for Student Development and Campus Life.

“Not only did my classmate and lifetime friend, Sharon Makatenas Szabo ’76, and I have the opportunity to share a great meal and learn about French wine but we were also surprised to recognize and greet other classmates in attendance,” says Ragan.

The event provided an opportunity to network and also gave attendees a chance to sample a total of five different wines, enjoy great food and take a journey through France.

“I enjoyed the journey through the vineyards of France, while enjoying French delicacies and experiencing fine French wines! For a Montclair State University French major, it was magnifiqué,” says Joan Jensen ’68, ’73 MA.

Events like the Annual Signature Wine Tasting give alumni the opportunity to connect with the University and network with fellow alumni and friends in their neighborhood.

“We ask that you stay connected to your alma mater and help us to continue to build a tradition of success for the next generation of Montclair State University graduates through a strong and active alumni network.  Be sure to check out the alumni website to learn more,” says Marano.
