‘Manual or Automatic: What Gears are Driving Your Career?’ – A Career-Focused Podcast

Posted in: Alumni News and Events

Did you know that The Center for Career Services at Montclair State offers a career-focused podcast? Alumni Jeff Poulos ’15 MA, career advisor for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Adam Mayer ’00, director of Career Development, host the podcast titled “Manual or Automatic: What Gears are Driving Your Career?,” which launched last fall.

“The platform is designed to give career and professional development tips and tricks to current students, alumni and listeners in general on their journey to career exploration,” says Poulos. “The episodes are about 15 minutes long and discuss a specific career focused topic.”

The podcast, which airs new episodes every Thursday, covers topics related to best resume practices, how to interview, types of interviews, how to structure a cover letter, best approaches to networking and more. In a recent episode, Poulos and Mayer discuss applicant tracking systems and how to navigate through them.

The idea of the podcast first started when Poulos wanted to become involved with WMSC-FM, Montclair State’s radio station. He contacted Anabella Poland, general manager, and the idea of creating this podcast was born. Poland has incorporated the podcast into the curriculum of a class. Since its launch, the podcast has been fully edited, engineered and produced by students.

Poulos and Mayer say that the podcast’s feedback has been positive. Last semester, it received more than 1,000 total listens. “We try our best to keep content engaging and informative, with a sprinkling of comedic relief, but also not too long, which has been key,” says Poulos.

Make sure to tune in! Take your career development on the road and listen when and where it is convenient for you. Listen and Subscribe! Alumni can also access the podcast through iTunes and College Radio – by searching WMSC 90.3.
