With the backdrop of a classic fall day, the 11th annual Red Hawk Open welcomed 116 golfers to tee off and raise more than $110,000 for Montclair State University student athletes and programs. The outing was held October 10 at Crestmont Country Club in West Orange, where attendees enjoyed a day on the links that included a BBQ lunch and dinner reception, along with raffles and prizes.

“It’s wonderful to see so many alumni and friends come together for a fun day of golf and for the important cause of creating opportunities for Montclair student athletes and our students pursuing sports-related careers,” says Rita Walters, vice president for Development and Alumni Engagement.

Proceeds from the 2023 outing will continue to enhance the student-run and produced Red Hawk Sports Network (RHSN), as well as provide upgrades to the Panzer Athletic Center locker room and the Panzer Fitness Center. Additionally, the support will help provide student coaching opportunities within Montclair State University Athletics.

“The 11th annual golf outing was a tremendous success, we appreciate the great support that we receive from our alumni, friends and campus partners,” says Rob Chesney, director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “The money raised continues to support all of our programs, enhancing the student-athlete experience. It was great seeing new and familiar faces, and we look forward to another great event next year.”

In his remarks to the group at dinner, President Jonathan Koppell shared University highlights, including the collaboration with New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) to renovate Yogi Berra Stadium and the work underway to create The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium, which is one of the only Negro League stadiums in the country. “All of our philanthropic work is aimed at helping students succeed…It’s all about the students we serve and the difference we can make in society… and we greatly appreciate your partnership.”

Senior Matt Bruchez, a Sports Communication major and one of the broadcast interns for the Red Hawk Sports Network, spoke to guests and thanked them for their support. “Every year, the Red Hawk Sports Network has been growing … much of that is thanks to donor support and proceeds from this golf outing – so on behalf of all the students who are getting hands-on experience and who are able to pursue their career goals, I thank you,” he said.
