At Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, student success is a central priority reflected in programs that uplift, support and empower students. Among these initiatives, the CHAMPIONS Program has emerged as a transformative force, equipping students with the tools, confidence and community needed to thrive.
Short for Creating Headstrong Aspiring Men Persistent in Overcoming Next Steps, the CHAMPIONS Program offers a comprehensive and student-centered approach to success by integrating mentorship, leadership development and holistic support. Through intentional programming and sustained engagement, the initiative ensures that students not only persist but excel.
A Mission Driven by Impact
The CHAMPIONS Program, funded through a Predominantly Black Institutions Competitive (PBI-C) Grant, is grounded in a clear mission to strengthen Bloomfield College’s delivery of student support services while increasing enrollment, retention, and graduation rates among Black male students. The program is rooted in the understanding that academic success is closely tied to resilience, determination, and access to meaningful support systems.
Participants are encouraged to embody the qualities of perseverance and focus. They are challenged to move forward with purpose even when faced with obstacles, demonstrating the grit required to achieve their goals.
CHAMPIONS participant Ayan Seignon shared, “Being a CHAMPION means striving for excellence, showing resilience in the face of challenges and leading by example through integrity, determination and a positive attitude.”
This approach supports not only academic achievement but also the development of confidence, identity and leadership capacity that extends beyond the classroom.

Programs That Make a Difference
The CHAMPIONS experience is defined by opportunities that support students throughout their academic journey. Through peer tutoring and mentoring, students receive personalized academic support while building connections with peers. Leadership workshops provide space for growth and reflection, helping students develop confidence, accountability and a strong sense of identity.
The program also features a guest speaker series that introduces students to new perspectives and professional pathways, offering both inspiration and practical insight. Mental health outreach initiatives ensure that students have access to important resources and discussions focused on stress management, identity and overall well-being.
A highlight of the program is the annual CHAMPIONS retreat, where participants engage in self-reflection, goal setting and community building in an off-campus setting. This experience strengthens relationships among cohort members while reinforcing the program’s emphasis on personal growth. Support continues throughout the year, including the summer months, when students remain connected through ongoing outreach from program staff.
“It’s about being part of a community with a greater purpose in mind—something that extends beyond college,” reflected CHAMPIONS program participant Anthony Conway. “CHAMPIONS challenges us to rise to the occasion in society while teaching us how to navigate life.”

Developing Leaders and Lifelong Alumni
Leadership development is central to the CHAMPIONS Program. Students are encouraged to view themselves as emerging leaders who are prepared to make meaningful contributions in their communities and professional fields. Through consistent support and intentional programming, participants graduate as well rounded individuals who are equipped with the skills, perspective and confidence needed to succeed.
This preparation extends beyond graduation. CHAMPIONS alumni remain engaged with the college as active members of the Bloomfield community, carrying forward the values of leadership, service and resilience that define the program. As graduates transition into their careers and communities, they reflect the program’s lasting impact.
“CHAMPIONS students exemplify the leadership, resilience and determination that define the Bloomfield College community. As alumni, they continue to strengthen that legacy by staying engaged, giving back and serving as role models for future generations,” said Maurice Lyle, President of the Bloomfield College Alumni Network.
Looking Ahead
As the CHAMPIONS Program continues to grow, its mission remains focused on empowering students, strengthening outcomes and preparing leaders who will make a lasting difference.
Through dedicated leadership, sustained support and continued collaboration, CHAMPIONS will remain a cornerstone of student success at Bloomfield College and a reflection of the institution’s commitment to excellence.
