Following an extensive search, Montclair State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Tim Fox ‘02 as the next Associate Vice President and Chief of Police, effective July 1, 2025.

Fox, a 21-year veteran of the Montclair State University Police Department, has held nearly every role in the department during his tenure—from dispatcher to officer, detective, supervisor and member of the command staff—bringing unmatched institutional knowledge and a proven track record of student-focused public safety leadership.

“I’m honored to continue serving Montclair in this new capacity,” said Fox. “I care deeply about this community, and I look forward to building on our department’s strong foundation of service, professionalism, and trust.”

Throughout his career, Fox has championed community engagement, operational excellence, and campus safety. He is currently leading a comprehensive policy and protocol review to position the department for dual accreditation through the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

Known for his steady leadership and collaborative approach, Fox has led the University’s protest response and First Amendment compliance efforts. He also developed and implemented both the student Crossing Guard program and the University Police Internship program, reflecting his commitment to integrating safety and student development.

Fox holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Montclair where he earned a BS in Commercial Recreation and Tourism. He has completed advanced executive leadership programs through the FBI and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

“Being an alum of Montclair State means being part of a community that shaped who I am both personally and professionally,” said Fox. “The University gave me my foundation, not only through academics but through lifelong relationships, mentors, and experiences that instilled in me a deep sense of service and pride.”

Fox was sworn in at a ceremony and reception on campus this past July. View photos from the event here.

“Standing at the podium to be sworn in at my alma mater was humbling beyond words. I thought about everyone who helped me get here. But I also thought about the students and how my responsibility now is to ensure they are safe, supported, and proud to call Montclair their home,” said Fox. “This title is more than a position, it’s a commitment to serve and to lead with integrity at the University that has given me so much.”
