“I have enjoyed my time at Montclair State, it has helped shape me into who I am today,” says Matt Barbiere ’10. Barbiere graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and is the co-founder of Two Ton Brewing, a local NJ brewery. “I was inspired by my oldest brother. He has been home brewing for about 15 years and is truly talented. I had the vision and I was determined to turn his skillful craft into a legitimate business model,” explains Barbiere.

Barbiere and Two Ton Brewing recently participated in the first ever Homecoming Beer Garden at Homecoming 2015. Two Ton joined three other local breweries and Barbiere was proud to be pouring his product at his alma mater. “My fondest memories of Montclair State are Homecoming. It is always great to see old friends and classmates and catch up,” says Barbiere.

His advice for people hoping to break into the industry? Get involved as early and often as possible. His involvement on campus was what ignited his desire for business. He joined the Tau Phi Beta Inc., a local business fraternity. “My fraternity was what helped spark my passion for business and prepared me for my ambitious career,” says Barbiere.

Barbiere is earning his Master’s degree in Education and plans to graduate this year. He describes how trying to balance a full-time job, part-time graduate school classes, and run a start-up can be pretty challenging, but soon Two Ton Brewing will be his full time-job. “My biggest opportunity was seizing the chance to start this company. I believe in myself and in my brother, and our dad shares our belief, he has allowed us to turn our dreams into reality. We are beyond excited for what the future holds for Two Ton Brewing,” says Barbiere.
